Buffy needs to follow a few conditions, one of which being her ability to pass make-up exams for all the classes she missed last school year. A student again, Buffy visits the library with Willow, where they find a variety of spell ingredients on the counter. Giles tells Buffy that he needs to perform a binding spell on Acathla to make sure the demon remains dormant. In order for the spell to work, Giles needs to know the exact details of how Buffy defeated Acathla and Angel. Buffy lays out the basics, leaving out the part where Angel's soul was restored. Later that night at the Bronze, Buffy turns down a dance offer from Scott Hope, a fellow student who's had his eyes on Buffy for a while. Cordelia points out an interesting couple on the dance floor. As Buffy watches them dance, she begins to suspect that the guy may be a vampire on the prowl. As they head out of the Bronze, Buffy and her friends follow them out. Sure enough, the guy is a vampire. What does take the group by surprise is the girl's handling of the situation. Instead of screaming and trying to run for her life, the girl proceeds to beat the crap out of the vampire, stopping momentarily to greet Buffy by name and introduce herself as Faith. This new Slayer then takes the stake out of Buffy's hand and finishes off the vamp before heading back inside. While the group listens to Faith's wild stories, Cordelia finally puts the pieces together and realizes that Faith was called forth in response to Kendra's death. Faith is unlike Buffy, but she's different than Kendra also. Kendra was always uptight and on the defensive, while Faith is much looser and a little wild. During their conversation, Faith informs Buffy that her Watcher is currently at an annual retreat. (Buffy Timeline site)

She immediately starts packing and starts to head out. Buffy stops her by mentioning her Watcher, who was killed by Kakistos. They hear a knock on the door, and Faith opens it. They are greeted by Kakistos, Mr. Trick, and a few of their cohort vampires. Buffy shuts the door and escapes out the back with Faith. The vampires chase them into a building. Seemingly safe for now, Faith explains that she witnessed Kakistos murdering her Watcher. Just then, Faith notices a couple of dead bodies on the floor. Buffy realizes that they didn't escape the vampires, but were instead driven into the building on purpose. As the vampires start to converge on them, Buffy and Faith run into the middle of the floor. Buffy takes on several vampires while Faith goes one-on-one with Kakistos. Paralyzed with fear, Faith can't fight back while Kakistos grabs her by the neck and repeatedly strikes her in the face. Buffy runs over to help, while Mr. Trick and a female vampire decide to abandon their master and head out into town on their own. Kakistos' body is so strong that Buffy's stake has no effect on him. Faith takes a cue from Kakistos' mockery and picks up a huge pointed beam. Before Kakistos can realize what she's doing, Faith drives it straight through his heart, causing Kakistos to crumble into dust. (Buffy Timeline site)

Riley tries to get the Initiative doctors to stop their sadistic tests on Oz and is thrown in the brig. Buffy and the gang launch a rescue mission for Oz and help Riley also, who deserts the project. Oz once again leaves town, leaving Willow and Tara to see where their relationship will go

Buffy returns to Sunnydale, where Spike and Adam have cut a deal - Spike splits Buffy from the Scooby Gang and Adam splits Spike from the restraining chip in his head; Buffy and Riley's best friend Forrest run into Adam in a cave - Forrest is skewered and Buffy barely escapes with her life; Angel shows up to apologize for the way he treated her in LA and runs into Riley; Spike's plan works and Buffy leaves the gang in a huff, while the last part of Adam's plan shows up - in the form of Riley

While Riley is held captive by Adam, thanks to the chip Prof. Walsh put in Riley's chest, the Scooby Gang deal with the feelings brought out by Spike. Gradually they realize that Spike was the one behind the whole mess and get the group back together in time for an all-out assault on Adam, holed up in the Initiative complex. The gang performs a spell to imbue Buffy with the combined power of all the Slayers there's ever been, giving her enough strength to turn aside Adams attacks and yank his power supply right out of his chest. Afterwards, they have to fight their way out of the complex, now overrun by a bunch of cyber-demons cooked up by Adam. They make it, of course, and the Initiative is shut down for good.

Back at Buffy's house after the showdown with Adam, the gang plans an all-night video marathon since they're all still too wired after the spell to sleep. Of course, once they all get still in the living room, they're asleep by the time the first movie starts. But their sleep is not peaceful. A malevolent force stalks them in their dreams. Eventually it comes down to it and Buffy, and Buffy realizes she's face to face with the very first Slayer. Buffy refuses to fight, and the all wake up, hale and hearty.

September - December 2002:
The re-opening of Sunnydale High School feels just like old times for Buffy as some undead students and faculty rise up and blame the Slayer for failing to protect them. Dawn and Buffy, together with some of Dawn's new friends join together to defeat the evil. Meanwhile, the newly-ensouled Spike is seeking solace in the maze-like basement of the new school,

Buffy wakes from a bad dream with the warning, "From beneath you, it devours." Xander meets a young woman, Nancy, who's dog was eaten by a large creature that burrowed up out of the ground. Spike offers his assistance in dealing with the monster, but Buffy and the gang are still a little uneasy about having him around. In tracking down the monster, the Scoobies soon discover that Anya has returned to her old ways. Meanwhile, Willow has mixed emotions as she prepares to leave England and return to Sunnydale.

Anya grants a wish, then wishes that she had never done so

She is prepared to face the consequences of her actions with D’Hoffryn thinking that he would kill her, but he kills her best friend instead

After battling a new vampire who claimed to have been recently sired by Spike, Buffy warns the gang that they must keep a close eye on him. When Spike manages to go out, he falls into a mysterious trance and then seduces and attacks a girl as the First Evil looks on. Meanwhile in England, Giles finds a fellow watcher close to death.

Spike is held captive in the Summers home while the Scoobies ponder their options in the aftermath of his murder spree. Willow finds Andrew buying blood and decides to take him prisoner also. While they try to decide what to do next, the gang are interrupted by the mysterious hooded figures called "Harbingers" or "Bringers" - the minions of the First Evil.

Giles arrives and reveals that the First Evil (first encountered in the episode Amends) is trying to destroy the Slayer line by killing all the Potential Slayers. Buffy and Giles search the Christmas tree lot where she last faced the First, and she encounters a creature out of nightmare called a Turok-Han.

January - May 2003:

Potential Slayers are arriving from around the world, seeking shelter in Sunnydale. Some of them, however, are starting to doubt that Buffy will be able to protect them from the First Evil. Giles and Anya seek answers and learn of a weakness in the Slayer line. Meanwhile, the Scoobies are rushing to fortify their defenses because nightfall will bring the Turok-Han.

Principle Woods joins in the fight

Andrew creates a documentary called Buffy, Slayer of the Vampyres, a record of the current situation in Sunnydale to show to future generations. He manages to capture many important moments, and to annoy almost everyone in the house.

Willow comes back to town with a powerful ally, but the First has a new piece on the board as well. A misogynistic "preacher" named Caleb has come to town, and he throws down the gauntlet as soon as he enters Sunnydale. Buffy, the Scoobies, and the Potentials go to take up the challenge with disastrous results.

Xander loses his eye and several of the potentials are dead

Caleb launches an attack against Buffy at Sunnydale High. Faith takes the potential slayers out to blow off some steam, but soon they run afoul of Sunnydale's Finest. Hurting from their last battle and unsure of Buffy's leadership, the gang makes a decision that may change everything.

Buffy is out as leader and Faith is in

Buffy leaves the house to join with Spike

Spike goes to comfort the displaced Buffy while Faith tries to rally the troops into action. Later, both Slayers set off on a late-night raid, and both find something completely unexpected.

They find the Scythe

Angel arrives with an amulet which may be a weapon against the First. The battle-lines are drawn and the gang spends the night preparing for the final confrontation. A confrontation that some may not survive. Armed with an amulet they know nothing about, a scythe which holds the key to the Slayer line, and magic which they may not be able to control, they prepare to face the assembled armies of the First Evil.

Buffy realizes what to do. Willow does a spell that takes power from the scythe and shares it equally among every Potential in the world, making everyone a slayer. The gang and the 'newly made' Slayers open the Seal of Danzalthar and go into the Hellmouth.

By now there are hundreds of Slayers, but there are thousands of Turok-Han. A long battle commences leaving many dead, including Anya. Spike is unable to fight as the amulet is pouring power through him, he begins to burn up inside as a huge beam of pure sunlight shoots out from his soul. All the Turok-Han are instantly dusted, but most of Sunnydale has been swallowed. With only minutes left Spike and Buffy hold each other, while everyone is leaving town in a bus. Spike tells Buffy to leave and live a normal life, while he walks back into Hell. Buffy runs after the speeding bus and catches up. Everyone looks at what was once Sunnydale. Buffy smiles knowing that there are hundreds of girls in the world that can fight off the eternal evil.
