He had seen and done many things in his long career but what he had just read grated against his core values. The ones he had always held himself, his job and his country to. Taking a calming breath, he made his decision and picked up the phone. “Good evening Mr. President. “ Leaning back into his chair he rubbed one hand across his bald skull. “Yes sir, I did get the chance to look over the folder. My honest opinion? I cannot deny that I am deeply disturbed to find out about these incidents. To be blunt Sir, I wondering how in blue blazes did the NID run an operation of this magnitude on U.S. soil and why we hadn’t heard of this before now?" Looked up at the ceiling as he listened to the President’s rant that he had no idea but there was no way in hell it was going to happen again on his watch. “Yes Sir, that's the main problem I can see forthcoming. I understand that the Initiative Program caused a lot of bad blood and frankly the NID have been a burr under my saddle for a while now. " Sighing “I agree hind sight is always clearer. No, I can not find any fault with the report, we are in agreement. No, under the circumstance I think it would be best if I personally headed this operation. Thank you sir, have a good evening.” Reaching over he hit the intercom. “Yes Sir?” “Sergeant Siler, have the flight line ready a plane for depart at 0600 tomorrow morning.” “Yes Sir and the destination?” “Cleveland, Ohio” Xander looked up as the bell over the door rang. He had only been working at the Star Bucks for two weeks and it was already two weeks too long. With an internal groan he plastered a fake smile on his face to greeted his newest customers. However the smile faltered as warning bells began to ring in the back of his head at the men's appearance. The first to enter was an older man in his fifties dressed in slacks and a short sleeve button down, closely followed by two younger but muscularly built men. All three individuals just screamed military from the cut of their hair to body posture, Xander knew for a fact that there wasn't a military base anywhere near them. Watching as the two shadows broke off and causally took positions that allowed them to cover the shop, he pegged them as being special forces. Now he knew something was definitely wrong, reaching over he palmed one of the working knives as the leader of the group reached the counter. “Welcome to the Star Bucks, how can I help you?’ With a friendly smile the older man regarded him for a moment. “Actually Mr. Harris I was hoping for a few minutes of your time.” Dropping all pretenses of pleasantness, Xander regarded the man before him coolly. His eye flickered over towards the two bodyguards as they tense in reaction to his abrupt change in demeanor. “I do not---“ Seeing the closed and hostile look come across the young man’s face, General Hammond quickly raised his hands. “Now wait just a minute son, I think we should get something straight here. Neither I nor any of my personnel have anything to do with the Initiative nor with the NID who was behind that program.” A flicker of interest crossed Xander’s face at that tid-bit of information. “I also completely understand that you and yours have a darn good reason to distrust the united states military and I and several of my colleague have had great pleasure in showing them the errors of their ways. However I am here on a matter of utmost importance and just ask that you give me a moment of your time and hear me out.” Xander stood there a moment and regarded the man before him, who stood with steadfast dignity and calmly met his gaze head on. Finally with a slight nod of his head, he agreed. “I get off in 20 minutes.” Sitting in a hotel suite Xander finished reading the file handed to him by General George Hammond. Who ironically was in command of a secret organization in charge of keeping the Earth safe from aliens. Sitting back General Hammond watched as several expressions quickly crossed young man’s face. Dropping the file back down on top of the table, Xander look up at him in incredulity. “Is this for real?” With a quirk of his lips the General regarded him back “As real as Vampires and Vampire Slayers.” “And you want me?” Setting his cup down the older man regarded him with a serious gaze. “Son, if it wasn’t for the cabinet level non-interference directive in your file. I know for a fact top recruiters from every branch of the service and a few alphabet soup agencies would have been vying to snatched you up as soon as legally possible.” With a deep chuckle. “In fact several of them are going to be mighty upset to find out that, I had been given the go ahead to contact you.” Xander merely shook his head at the thought that someone would actually be interested in him. “Enough of that.” Startled at the stern tone of voice Xander looked up to see the older man regarding him with a solemn look. “I don’t know who it was that made you believe that you were nothing special son, but they were wrong, dead wrong. Your little group may not know everything you’ve done over the years but we do, and frankly you’ve dam well impressed some important people, including the President of the United States. “W-what?” Xander stuttered in shock. “It’s on his behalf that I am here today.” Digesting that information, Xander looked down at the table top tapping his fingers on top of the file. He had followed the group to Cleveland after the fall of Sunnydale, only to quickly find himself to be the odd man out. Willow had Kennedy, Buffy and Faith had the potentials to help them and Giles and Wood were both involved with rebuilding the new Slayer’s Council. This was a chance for him to make a new start doing something significant. The earnest smile that graced the young man's face before him as he looked up told General Hammond all he needed to know. "So tell me more about this Atlantis.” Part 2 Written: 8 Oct 2005/updated July 2013 Stargate Command "Begin the dialing sequence." "Chevron Five encoded." "Chevron Six encoded." Xander watches in fascination as the ancient artifact twists and turns before him, a breath taking work of beauty and function. "Chevron Eight is locked." Cascading outward in a fountain of liquid light. "And we have a go people." Grinning like a loon Xander walks up the ramp, pausing to taking in the iridescent pool before him before taking a deep breath and stepping through. “Whoa” what a rush.” The cold tingling sensation of gating course from the top of his head and down to the soles of his feet. Behind him he heard a few of the Marines snort good naturedly. “Newbie.” “Enough of the squawk!” The raspy voice of the Gunny Sergeant standing outside the gate cut through the group. “We’ve at WAR not on a sight seeing tour, so get your asses in gear and clear the dam platform!" "Move it! Move it! Move it!" " You’ll all have plenty of time to stare at the flashing shiny lights later, after we deal with the Wraith.” Adjusting the two duffel bags slung across his back, Xander quickly followed the Marines lead and double timed it down the ramp and into the designated in processing center below. As he passed the Gunny, the weathered soldier did a double take of the hardware strapped upon the younger man's back. “Dam it kid, who the hell are you suppose to be?” Casting the man a wry grin. “Alexander Harris, Atlantis new specialist on myth and folklore.” Shaking his head, the Gunny turned back towards the gate. There was hell of a lot of work to be done if they were to hold Atlantis until the Daedalus arrived. It wasn’t his place to question why one of the new arrives was caring a crossbow and a battle ax strapped across his back. Nope not his place at all, dam he was getting to old for this shit. Part 3 Written: 12 Nov 2005/revised Nov 2013 The skies above the city crackled and burned as the Wraith continued their bombardment of Atlantis. A brief flickering was the was the only warning any of the defending personnel had before the shield protecting the city finally failed. It didn't take long afterwards for many of the city inhabitants to find themselves trapped within their own personal hell as the Wraith Darts broke through and into the floating city. In one of the upper balconies of Atlantis a cold brown eye man calmly took aim and proceeded too picked off the approaching Wraith intent on taking out the anti aircraft guns on the tier below. As the night progress he lost count of the number that fell under his sights, nor did he want to remember. His sole objective was to keep the three man crew firing the big guns safe as the battle waged above and below them. Suddenly a ragged cheer filled the air as the Wraith Darts un-explainable broke off their attack. The air waves were filled with voices as troops and civilian personnel were repeatedly told to stand down and cease firing. Above the city a high pitch whine ominously filled the air barely seconds before the world abruptly exploded in a blaze of light and fire. Ducking Xander quickly threw up a protective arm as debris rain down from the building above. The shock wave of the explosion rocking the foundation of the city ship. As the tremors passed he cautiously peered out, blinking away the spots blurring his vision. Only to gaze around in amazement, finding the city no longer floating as it had been but once again submerged into the inky depths of the ocean. The water's icy cold expansion once again held back by the city's functional shields. "The cranky son of a bitch did it!" With a laugh Xander let out of Whoop joining the cheers filling the air around him. Swearing that next time he saw McKay he would give the egotistical diva a kiss on the mouth along with his head minion. They had did it, against the odds, they had did it! The impromptu celebration was quickly ended however as the air waves once again filled with voices as sectors called in accountability, casualties, damages and assistance as needed. Slumping back against the wall, Xander wiped his brow tiredly and closed his eyes. “Join the SGC Mr. Harris and see the Galaxy, be apart of something that will change history for all mankind. What do I get? Butt ugly space vampires, killer miniature robots and one big bad after another intent on human annihilation or domination.” A small grin pulled on the corner of his mouth as he looked out over his new home. “And here I thought I wasn't going to fit in.” The End.
